BASS AND BARRACUDA
Posted On June 15, 2012
Most of the half- and three-quarter-day skippers are focusing on local bass and barracuda action, which has broken pretty much wide-open in recent days, and this bite is hot all along the coast. Add in bonus white seabass and halibut, and wefre seeing the best fishing of the year right now. Just a few counts as examples: San Diego out of Seaforth reported in late June 13 with near-limits of barracuda for all anglers on board plus five seabass. That was a repeat of a June 12 trip. Helena out of Dana Wharf was at the La Jolla Kelp June 9 on an evening three-quarter-day trip, and the 12 anglers aboard had 36 calicos, 32 sand bass and four white seabass over 40 pounds -- including one at 67.2 pounds. Farther up the coast in the Newport to Santa Monica Bay region, the story is the same. Enterprise out of Marina Sportfishing in Long Beach was out June 12 with 38 anglers, and they caught 217 sand bass, 86 barracuda and three halibut. On June 11, the same boat was out with 19 anglers, and they landed 139 sand bass and 117 barracuda. Southern Cal out of Pierpoint Landing was on a half-day trip June 12 with 25 anglers, and they caught 58 barracuda and 31 sand bass. The 26 anglers aboard Spitfire out of Marina del Rey landed 130 calicos, 120 rockfish and one ling. It just doesn’t get much better than this.
