Colorado River, March 30 Report

ARIZONA FISHING REPORTS: The Arizona Game and Fish Department compiles a weekly report for most waters in the state, including the Colorado Rivers. Anglers can read the report at this direct link.

FLOW INFORMATION: Reservoir elevation levels and flow releases for the entire lower Colorado River are available at this website with information updated hourly.

TOP NEWS: Warmer temperatures over the past two weeks have really started to turn on the warmwater bites all along the river, especially for the largemouth and smallmouth bass, but the fishing pressure is still very light. The lower river always goes off first, and the bite is good to excellent in the lower river south of Lake Havasu, especially the backwater lakes. Cibola Lake opened March 15 last week, and the few reports from there have been good. Havasu is starting to turn on with the bass — both largemouth and smallmouth — moving up out of the deep water in a major pre-spawn movement of fish. Mohave is just a little behind the lower parts of the river. Topoc Marsh and Topoc Gorge are both starting to take off for largemouths. The stripers are also getting good all along the river with some good catches reported in Havasu, but most of the fish are still in deeper water on schools of baitfish. In Mohave, the stripers are fair to good, mostly on cut baits at the south end of the lake. Topoc Marsh is wide open for smaller stripers, mostly on cut anchovies. Cliff and Matt McDonald, both Mohave Valley, had 20 stripers in the two to three pound range, but one was about four pounds. All were caught from the marsh this week. Trout were planted two weeks ago in the river at Davis Camp and the Community Park in the Bullhead area, just fair action. Catfish are improving, especially in backwaters, ditches, and canals all along the river, but mostly for channels. The flathead bite is waking up, however. There was a 22-pound flathead reported at Walter’s Camp near Palo Verde this week.
