GENERAL UPDATE: General trout season is closed, but many waters in Inyo and Mono counties remain open year-around. Anglers should check the regulations on open waters and special restrictions. The early trout opener was March 4 on Inyo County waters south of (and including) Independence Creek and west of Highway 395. Top Eastern Sierra fishing report web sites are: KensSport.com (Bridgeport region), TheTroutFly.com, and SierraDrifters.com.
TOP NEWS: The early trout season opener was good with great weather and planted fish at most locations, including Cottonwood Creek, Diaz Lake, Georges Creek, Independence Creek, Lone Pine Creek, the Owens River (below Tinnemaha), Shepherd Creek, Symmes Creek, and Tuttle Creek. This week’s plants include Cottonwood Creek, Georges Creek, Independence Creek, Owens River (section 2), Pleasant Valley Reservoir, Shepherd Creek, Symmes Creek, and Tuttle Creek. Anglers should check the regulations for open waters for this event and restrictions.
In the year-around waters, the lower Owens River below Pleasant Valley Reservoir has continued to see its flows increased. Last week the flows jumped from 350 to nearly around 600 cfs. These are tough fishing flows, but some trout are still showing for anglers fishing nymphs near the bottom (lots of lead). The East Walker flows flow has been a very consistent 330 cfs over the past week, but the fishing is still pretty tough with the best bite on nymphs bounced along the bottom or streamers swung through the quieter side channels. Light pressure. The West Walker flows have around 170 cfs this week. Zero fishing pressure. The top spot in the region continues to be the Owens River above Crowley. There are a lot of big rainbows up out of Crowley in the Hot Fingers stretch of the Owens River, but access is still problematic and anglers should check with one of the fly shops for news. The bite remains fair for the big 16 to 22 inch-fish that have run up out of Crowley Lake.
