Fish Report-Freshwater, Sept. 9

TOP NEWS: Fishing pressure has dropped to almost nothing size Labor Day weekend. Top bets in the region are the Virginia Lakes with a lot of nice holdover and stocker trout showing for fly, lure, and bait anglers, Crowley Lake for fly anglers tossing streamers to perch-chasing browns, rainbows, and cutthroats, and all of the higher elevation waters above 8,500 feet where the leaves are turning color and the brook trout and stacking up in the stream mouths for the spawn. Other good bets include Convict Lake, which has cranked out some real quality stockers in the past week. The best was a 7-8 rainbow landed by Frank Quiroz, San Bernardino, on garlic PowerBait while fishing the South Shore. Prisiliano Madrigal, Temecula, had a 6-7 rainbow from Convict. The East Walker River flows remain very low but the fishing is good, mostly on smaller fish now. Rock Creek and Bishop Creek are good for stream anglers, too. Oddly, no trout plants listed for the whole region this week.
