DANA POINT – The fishing season was quite active in October with dorados, tuna and yellowtail frequently biting. This year’s fishing season was also a good one for Dana Wharf Sportfishing.

According to General Manager Donna Kalez, Dana Wharf Sportfishing reeled in a record three wahoo in October, including a 36 pounder brought aboard Clemente.

Pictured here with angler Keith Shannon, of San Clemente, and Clemente’s Capt. Chad, the 36-pound wahoo was the largest ever caught for Dana Wharf Sportfishing.

“Crazy stuff to look back on for sure, like wahoo in our fish counts for the first time ever,” said Capt. Brian, of Sum Fun “2014 is without a doubt a year that we will all look back on with massive smiles. This season really did have anglers set up for success.”

According to multiple news reports, another large wahoo was caught shortly after Clemente’s catch, this one measuring more than 84 pounds and reeled in by Dana Point angler Alex Dupre.

State officials told FishRap that Dupre contacted them hoping to have the catch officially listed as the largest wahoo ever reeled in off the California coast, however, the state has never maintained a category for record-setting wahoo catches, nor do officials plan on monitoring the species in light of what recreational anglers reeled in near Dana Point.
