1. The 2017 Glen Helen trout derby is this Saturday (Jan. 7), and both county and DFW fish will be planted for the event, including some bigger grade rainbows. There will be $1,000 in cash and prizes. The derby begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.. Entry fee is $20 per angler, and there is a $10 vehicle entry into the park. Top rainbow this past week was a 15-pounder so this is a top bet. For more information call the park at 909-887-7540.
2. Another top trout bet is Lake Wohlford in San Diego County. It is getting a big 3,000-pound plant this week, and these fish will join the 9,000 pounds already planted so far this trout season. The fishing has been pretty fair, but this plant should put it over the top. For more information, call the lake at 760-839-4346 or go to wohlfordlake.com.
3. Still in the top picks, the carp bite at Lake Perris continues to perk along. Many of the fish are running from 10 to 20 pounds on homemade dough baits. Top spots have been along the south side of the lake, especially in the Sail Cove area, around the marina docks and at Lots 11 and 12. For an update and tips on fishing this bite check with the marina staff at 951-657-2179.
