1. Crowley Lake stays the top pick this week, in spite of tough conditions over the weekend. The bite remains wide open on rainbows and cutthroats to five pounds and some brown trout in that same size range. There have been a number of reports of 30-fish days over the past couple of weeks. The bite has been almost exclusively on midge fly patterns fished under a strike indicator, but the perch fry are starting to hatch. For an update on this action, check with the Troutfitter in Mammoth Lakes at 760-934-2517.
2. The trout bite at Big Bear Lake has remains good with a lot of quality fish. The big fish are thanks to trophy fish plants for a pair of recent derbies, and the DFW has been adding keeper rainbows every other week. There have been fish to six-plus pounds reported over the past week. For an update on this bite, check with Big Bear Sporting Goods at 909-866-3222. They stay on top of where the trout are best and what is working.
3. The flathead catfish bite in the lower river is really starting to sizzle with a lot of 15 to 20-pound class fish showing in the Palo Verde stretch of the Colorado River. The best this past week was a 32-pounder at Walter’s Camp. All are showing on live bluegill or goldfish. For an update on this bite, check with Walter’s Camp at 760-854-3322. Oh, just FYI, it’s supposed to be around 115 degrees here this weekend.
