TROUT: The top bets for planted fish are Lake Wohlford after a bonus plant last week, Dixon Lake, Santa Ana River Lakes, Lake Poway, Lake Jennings, Cuyamaca, Hesperia Lake and Silverwood Lake. The San Bernardino County Parks stocking program has weekly trout plants at Glen Helen, Yucaipa, Cucamonga-Guasti and Mojave Narrows Parks, but Prado is not getting fish this year. Glen Helen, which had bonus fish for its annual derby last week, is a good pick.
BLACK BASS: The bass action has generally been slowing with cool weather, wet throughout the region. Most of the action has reverted to deeper water and plastics, jigs, ice jigs, or nightcrawlers. While no place gets better than a slow to fair rating, the top bet remains San Vicente Reservoir, with other slowish but decent bets Lower Otay, Diamond Valley, Casitas, Perris, Castaic, Wohlford, Piru and Pyramid. On the Colorado River the lower river is fair for smallmouth (with zero fishing pressure), but the largemouth bites have pretty much tanked.
STRIPED BASS: The striper action has been generally fair everywhere this past week. Recent trout plants at Silverwood, Pyramid, Castaic and Diamond Valley have brought up a few bigger stripers, most on swimbaits, but the bulk of the action is on smaller fish on trolled flies, spoons, ice jigs, swimbaits or cut baits — but especially trolled flies. The best action has been at Pyramid and Castaic, but Skinner and Silverwood have also been fair. Diamond Valley Lake has been producing a fair number of school-sized fish on trolled flies and a few bigger fish on swimbaits. The Colorado River’s Lake Havasu has continued to be pretty fair with a few bigger fish showing, and Mohave has been fair, but the fish are mostly in deeper water.
PANFISH: Few reports on panfish. Only a very few bluegill are still showing at Perris and Murray, and the Lower Otay crappie bite is still perking along.
CATFISH: Overall slow catfish action. The best action has been at Isabella and Cachuma, with pretty fair bites at those two lakes. Also a fair channel catfish bites on the Colorado River.
