SILVERADO – Irvine Lake will be filled with nothing but treats on Halloween as trout season opens Oct. 31.
The lake’s operators say the trout opener will feature a large stock of exotic brown trout. Approximately 10,000 pounds of hook-jawed brown trout plus an additional 10,000 pounds of Calaveras rainbow trout are expected to be planted into Irvine Lake by the time anglers arrive on Oct. 31.
Entry to the VIP Day tournament held on Oct. 30 is $150 and includes a fishing pass, use of a motor boat or private launch, raffle ticket, catered breakfast and lunch. Reservations are required for VIP Day.
Anglers who catch the three heaviest trout during VIP Day will received a custom trophy.
From Oct. 31 onwards, regular fees apply for anglers visiting Irvine Lake. Fees are $24 for adults and $11 for children age 4 to 11; a senior discount is available Monday through Thursday.
With the launch of trout season, Irvine Lake will be open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Last year, trout season opened with about 400 people visiting Irvine Lake.
A seminar sponsored by Irvine Lake was held Oct. 23 in Brea with Marlon Meade to teach attendees techniques to catch a high ratio of trout and discuss jig fishing, trolling techniques and the newest baits and lures.
The record catch for brown trout at Irvine Lake is 12.6 pounds; the largest rainbow trout catch measured 22.6 pounds.
