Picks of the week

  1. The Dixon Lake 38th Annual Trout Derby will be this weekend, Dec. 2 to 4. The lake will be planted with 6,000 pounds of trout this week before the derby, and it has already been stocked with 1,500 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalkers this past Tuesday and 4,500 pounds two weeks ago. There will also be a lot of trophy fish planted for this weekend’s derby. Yes, it will be crowded, but the fishing is always good. The lake is closed to fishing until 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2. For more information, call the lake at 760-839-4680 or go to dixonlake.com.
  2. For the second week in a row, there has been a very good carp bite at Lake Perris with fish to 20-plus pounds reported. This is a specialist’s game with most of the bigger fish showing on homemade dough baits along the south side of the lake, but especially in the Sail Cove area around the marina docks as well as at Lots 11 and 12. For an update and tips on fishing this bite, check with the marina staff at 951-657-2179.
  3. For the second week in a row, winds have hampered the bluefin tuna bite and the water temperatures have continued to decline, but the presence of squid has kept the giant bluefin tuna on the Tanner Bank. Anglers continue to get them mostly at dawn, dusk and at night. There continue to be 60 to 120-pound giants. The 1.5-day boats are able to get in on the night action in this unbelievable winter bite.
