Eastern Sierra, Jan. 12 Report

GENERAL UPDATE: General trout season is closed, but many waters in Inyo and Mono counties remain open year-around. Anglers should check the regulations on open waters and special restrictions. Top Eastern Sierra fishing report web sites are: KensSport.com (Bridgeport region), TheTroutFly.com, and SierraDrifters.com.

TOP NEWS: Heavy rain and snow for much of the past week. The lower Owens River below Pleasant Valley Reservoir has seen flows go from over 3,200 cfs down to 116 cfs in this week. The West Walker has been a torrent (jumping from around 100 cfs to over 1,000 cfs between Friday and Sunday). The East Walker is still about 25 cfs below Bridgeport Reservoir but has received almost no pressure in recent days. Ditto for the upper Owens above Crowley Lake. The upper Owens still has a lot of trout that have run up out of Crowley in the Hot Fingers stretch of the river. Access to the upper Owens and Hot Creek is via snowmobile right now. Be prepared for cold conditions and snow.
