Find a piece of kelp or any structure, and there will be calico bass on it — in a bite mode. All the local boats from Oceanside into Santa Monica Bay have been having very good action this week. The sand bass and barracuda are hot, and the calico action is excellent. There are also still a lot of white seabass along the coast that provide the occasional fun surprise. Sport King out of L.A. Harbor Sportfishing was out on a three-quarter day trip with 14 anglers on June 27, and they landed 123 sand bass, 17 calicos, 19 barracuda and a sculpin. Southern Cal had 14 anglers on its morning morning half-day trip June 26, and they caught 84 barracuda and 15 red snapper.
