Riverside County, Dec. 1 Report

DIAMOND VALLEY: The lake was planted with 3,500-pound of Mt. Lassen rainbows two weeks ago, and the bite in the shoreline fishing areas adjacent to the marina has been slow to fair on one to two-pound trout. The largemouth bass bite has continued fair to good, with mostly two to three-pound fish in the bite. The best action is on plastics fished drop-shot style or Carolina-rigged in less than 20 feet of water around flooded structure. A few bigger fish are mostly in 30 to 40 feet of water. The water level continues to come up. The striped bass action has been fair with a decent number of smaller fish showing on trolled flies or cast cranks and swimbaits. Few catfish or bluegill reports. Private boats must be inspected to be quagga mussel-free and boats certified at Lake Perris and Lake Skinner will be accepted here. PERRIS: The carp bite continues to get a lot of attention here with some big fish showing on homemade dough baits. The bite has been good all along the north shore from Sail Cove to the launch ramps. Sheldon Lewis, Moreno Valley, had 27 carp over two days with his best at 13-8, all on homemade dough bait. Andy Chow, Diamond Bar, landed a 20-7 carp on corn bait off the marina docks. The largemouth bass also remain fair on plastic worms. Senkos, and lipless cranks along the weed lines all around the lake. The dam and outlets have been the hots spots and while most fish are three pounds or under, there have been some better fish reported. Tops this week was a 6-2 landed by Earl Johnson, Menifee, near the dam on a lipless crank. It was the best of three fish he landed. The bluegill and redear bites are also still fair. Bluegill anglers are seeing the best action off the dam and west of the islands in 15 to 25 feet of water with wax worms, meal worms, red worms, and crickets. The redear are starting to show off the marina docks. Few reports on other species with no DFW trout plants yet this season. The reconstruction of the Lake Perris dam is ongoing. During the process, the entire dam and Bernasconi Beach side of the lake, including the Bernasconi Beach parking area, will be closed to public access. (The closure includes the bicycle trail on the east side of the lake.) The recreation area remains open, including access for fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. The west side of the lake will remain open. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Silverwood or Diamond Valley will also be allowed at Perris. Information: marina 951-657-2179, state park 951-940-5600.

SKINNER: First 600-pound county trout plant of the season went in two weeks ago and the next 600-pound stock was slated to go in Wednesday this week. No DFW plants yet. Overall, the trout bite remains slow with only a few reported from the east end. Most of the action on other species has slowed down, but the trout plant should cause some bigger stripers to come up. The catfish action has also been fair at the buoy line, inlet, Ramp No. 2, and Catfish Alley on chicken liver and mackerel. The largemouth bass bite slowed down, but some fish are still showing along the south shorelines on reaction baits and plastics. Lots of two-pound class fish. The bluegill bite has been slow to fair with a few still showing along the south side of the lake or at the inlet. Best action has been on crickets, meal worms, red worms, and small jigs.
