San Diego Area Lakes, Aug. 31 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: San Vicente Reservoir will reopen to the public Sept. 22. Reservations have been issued through Ticketmaster for the first week. Jennings final 2,000-pound catfish plant of the season was slated for this week. There will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby Sept. 24. It is open to kid up to 15 and trout will be planted prior to the event.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass and bluegill bites have been the best bet, while catfish have been fair. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. There is generally pretty fair topwater action early in the day and then the fish move deeper and show on live shiners (where legal), nightcrawlers, or plastics. For bluegill and/or redear, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have fair to good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits. At Cuyamaca, trout fishing is very spotty.

FISH COUNTS: At Barrett Lake, there was no report for this past week. At El Capitan, there were 68 anglers checked who reported 132 bass.
