San Diego Area Lakes, July 21 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Still no news on when San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen. There is apparently an issue with the docks that is keeping the lake from opening. Catfish plants have been weekly (1,000 pounds) at Dixon Lake with fish last week and slated again for week. Jennings was scheduled to get a 2,000-pound plants this week. Poway was planted with 1,300 pounds of catfish two weeks ago.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass bite has been the best bet. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. Most waters are also seeing much better bluegill and redear action. Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have a particularly good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now. Even waters not getting catfish plants yet have been fair on catfish. Cuyamaca’s trout bite has finally started to slow down because of the warm weather. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits.

FISH COUNTS: This past week, there were 33 anglers at Barrett and they reported 1,416 bass. At El Capitan, 23 anglers checked reported 47 bass. At Hodges, 160 anglers reported 150 bass, 10 channel catfish, and seven bluegill. At Miramar, 22 anglers checked reported 47 bass to 4 pounds and seven bluegill to just under a pound.
