San Diego Area Lakes, Oct. 13 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Catfish plants are done for the year, and trout plants don’t begin until November at most waters.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the action has taken taken marked downward turns over the past week to 10 days. While bass and bluegill bites are still the best bets, both slowed in recent day. Catfish remain slow to fair, but some quality fish are starting to show. Top bet for bass remains San Vicente, which has been very good on two to four-pound bass with some bigger. Best bite on plastics fished in 12 to 30 feet of water. Also some nice bluegill showing and some catfish. Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan are all slow to fair on the bass with light fishing pressure. For bluegill and/or redear, Miramar, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay all have fair bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits.

FISH COUNTS: At El Capitan, 61 anglers reported 85 bass. At Miramar, 16 anglers reported 27 bass to 3.95 pounds and six bluegill to 1-10. At Hodges, 60 anglers caught 23 bass and three channel catfish. At Murray, 27 anglers reported just five bluegill. Counts not available for other lakes. Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Kate Henderson, San Diego, had 13 bluegill to 1.5 pounds on red worms off the fishing pier. There was an unverified report of a 90-pound blue catfish at San Vicente.
