San Diego Area Lakes, Oct. 20 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Catfish plants are done for the year, and trout plants donĂt begin until November at most waters. Hodges closes until spring on Oct. 30. Sutherland and Barrett are closed until next year.

FISHING UPDATE: Overall, the bass action has been fair to good at most waters. San Vicente remains probably the best bet for bass with most of the fish showing from 25 to 35 feet of water on plastics and jigs, but a few flurries of topwater action morning and evening. Panfish bites are also still fair with some flurries of very good action, but they are starting to slow as nights and waters cool. While getting light pressure, the bluegill are best at San Vicente, Murray, and Miramar. Jennings has had a good catfish bite this past week during the full moon, with a number of limits of fish to four pounds posted on cut baits or nightcrawlers in Half Moon and Sentry coves.

FISH COUNTS: At El Capitan, 23 anglers reported 47 bass. At Hodges, there were 48 anglers checked and they reported 31 bass and two crappie. At Miramar, 14 anglers reported 30 bass to 4.10 pounds and 15 bluegill to 1.25 pounds. At Murray, 36 anglers reported 14 crappie and four bluegill. Counts not available for other lakes. Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Wohlford, Justin Kennedy of Valley Center caught and released a 9.90-pound bass on a swimbait from Senior Shoreline. At Jennings, young Braeden Malcuit, Lakeside, landed a 4-4 catfish from Shadow Cove on mackerel. At Murray, John Campbell, San Diego, had a limit of 25 bluegill and his top fish was a two pounder, all caught off the fishing pier on red worms.
