San Diego Area Lakes, Oct. 27 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Catfish plants are done for the year, and trout plants don’t begin until November at most waters. Lake Cuyamaca received its third plant of the season on Tuesday with a 1,200-pound plant of rainbows from Jess Ranch (there were two plants in September). Lake Dixon will get its first trout plant with a 4,500-pound plant of Nebraska Tailwalkers slated for November 16. Lake Jennings announced its trout season will begin Nov. 19 after a 1,700-pound plant of rainbows from Idaho. Poway will also begin its trout season in “late November.” Other lakes will be announcing schedules soon. Hodges closes until spring on Oct. 30. Sutherland and Barrett are closed until next year.

FISHING UPDATE: Overall, the bass action has been fair to good at most waters. San Vicente remains probably the best bet for bass with most of the fish showing from 25 to 35 feet of water on shiners, plastics, and jigs. Panfish bites are also still fair with some flurries of very good action, but they are starting to slow as nights and waters cool. While getting light pressure, the bluegill are best at Lower Otay, San Vicente, and Murray. Jennings has continued to have a fair catfish bite on cut baits or nightcrawlers in Half Moon and Sentry coves. The trout bite at Cuyamaca is improving with the cooler weather.

FISH COUNTS: At El Capitan, 19 anglers checked reported 31 bass. At Hodges, there were 78 anglers checked and they reported just 18 bass and two crappie. At Miramar, 15 anglers reported 53 bass to 4.25 pounds and 11 bluegill to a pound. At Lower Otay, 49 anglers reported 167 bass to six pounds and 78 bluegill to a pound. Counts not available for other lakes. Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Lake Morena, Stephen Washer, San Diego, landed a 7-7 bass on a swimbait.
