San Diego Area Lakes, Sept. 22 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The biggest news is the reopening of San Vicente Reservoir to public anglers on Thursday this week. There was a special even on Wednesday attended by San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer. Reservations have been issued through Ticketmaster for the first week. Call Ticketmaters or the city lakes for information on reservations. At Jennings, there will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby Saturday, Sept. 24. It is open to kid up to 15 and trout will be planted prior to the event.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass and bluegill bites are still the best bets, while catfish have been fair. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. There is generally pretty fair topwater action early in the day and then the fish move deeper and show on live shiners (where legal), nightcrawlers, or plastics. For bluegill and/or redear, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have fair to good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits. At Cuyamaca, trout fishing is very spotty.

FISH COUNTS: At Barrett Lake, 58 anglers reported 1,644 bass. At El Capitan, 12 anglers checked had 21 bass. Hodges staff checked 75 anglers and they landed 45 bass to seven pounds and 15 channel catfish. At Miramar, 17 anglers checked had 51 bass to 4.5 pounds and 17 bluegill to 1.25 pounds. At Sutherland, 30 anglers checked reported 16 bass to 3.5 pounds, six carp, and one channel catfish. Counts not available for other lakes.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Mike Courtwright, Chula Vista, landed a 6-pound bass on a shiner. Monica Salez, San Diego, had 15 bluegill on redworms from Cowles Bay and her best was 1.5 pounds.
