San Diego Area Lakes, Sept. 29 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Trout plants don’t begin until November at most waters.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass and bluegill bites are still the best bets, while catfish have been fair. Top bets for bass include the newly opened San Vicente followed by Barrett. Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan are all a few notches below. There is generally pretty fair topwater action early in the day and then the fish move deeper and show on live shiners (where legal), nightcrawlers, or plastics. For bluegill and/or redear, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have fair to good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits. At Cuyamaca, trout fishing is very spotty. Jennings has been producing a few catfish limits each week in a pretty fair bite.

FISH COUNTS: At the San Vicente opening week, there were 346 anglers checked and they reported 4,173 bass to seven pounds, 33 bluegill, 11 channel catfish, and two redear. At Barrett, 27 anglers reported 535 bass. At El Capitan, 104 anglers reported 171 bass. At Hodges, 65 anglers reported 49 bass. At Miramar, 12 anglers reported 40 bass to 4 1/2 pounds and six bluegill to a pound. At Sutherland, 31 anglers reported 20 bass and six bluegill. Counts not available for other lakes.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At San Vicente, Ryan Crandell, Moreno Valley, had bass to seven pounds opening day. Mikee and Barbara Hernandez, Poway, reported catching four to six-pounders “all day” opening Thursday, along with a pile of smaller fish. Andre Casey Smith, San Diego, reported a 30-pound, five-fish limit in the first two hours of fishing opening day.
