San Diego Area Lakes, Sept 9 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: San Vicente Reservoir will reopen to the public Sept. 22. Reservations have been issued through Ticketmaster for the first week. Call Ticketmaters or the city lakes for information on reservations. Jennings final 2,000-pound catfish plant of the season went in last week. There will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby Sept. 24. It is open to kid up to 15 and trout will be planted prior to the event.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass and bluegill bites are still the best bets, while catfish have been fair. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. There is generally pretty fair topwater action early in the day and then the fish move deeper and show on live shiners (where legal), nightcrawlers, or plastics. For bluegill and/or redear, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have fair to good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits. At Cuyamaca, trout fishing is very spotty.

FISH COUNTS: Not available this week.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Lake Jennings, Manuel Cardozo, with help from his son Alan, both Lakeside, landed a 46.3-pound catfish on mackerel from the shore in Half Moon Cove. At Wohlford, Tim Sitola, Oceanside, caught and released a 9.35-pound bass drop-shotting a six-inch plastic worm west of the senior shoreline. At Murray, Michael Stilson, Illinois, landed 20 bluegill and redear up to three pounds on red worms in Del Cerro Bay, while David Connery, San Diego, had five catfish to 13 pounds in Cast Cove on mackerel and shrimp.
