Western Sierra, Dec. 8 Report

LAKE ISABELLA: Very light fishing pressure, but there is still a slow to fair catfish bite on minnows, dip baits, and large meal worms. Most are two to three pounds, but some bigger. KERN RIVER: The first DFW plant of the season went in three weeks ago in Section 4 (Kernville region). The Kern River has been slow to fair for wild and holdover fish above Kernville in the bigger pools for bait anglers (crickets and salmon eggs) or flies. Flows remain about 80 cfs coming into Isabella and from 120 to 180 cfs below the dam. In the lower river the bass and catfish bites are slow with a few bass on plastic worms and nightcrawlers, while the cats are best on clams or nightcrawlers, and all the action is in the bigger pools. AQUEDUCT NEAR TAFT: There continues to be a fair bite on small stripers with a few over the minimum keeper size. Most are showing on blood or lug worms, mackerel, and sardines. With light pressure, there have been very few reports on other species over the past week or so. Anglers are reminded the limit on stripers is two fish greater than 18 inches, while the largemouth limit is five fish. Information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or bobsbaitbucket.com.

MILL CREEK PARK AND CANAL: Few reports with only the odd catfish being caught now.

RIVER WALK PARK LAKE: DFW trout plants two and four weeks ago, and a plant is slated for next week. The bite has been slow for trout, with only a few fish showing on PowerBait or inflated nightcrawlers doused with garlic oil. No other report.

HART PARK LAKE: Slow with little fishing activity. A few bass still showing, but other species very slow.

TRUXTUN LAKE: Slow overall with little activity. An occasional bass is showing on live minnows or nightcrawlers.

MING LAKE: A few trout continue to show at Ming after DFW plants two and four weeks ago. No plant scheduled for this week or next week. The best action has been on bait, either PowerBait or nightcrawlers with the garlic flavors preferred. No other reports.

BRITE LAKE: DFW trout plant scheduled for next week, and the first plant of the season went in two weeks ago. Still the odd holdover fish showing.

BUENA VISTA LAKES: The lake is slated to get county trout this week and every two weeks after this plant. While the bite has been slow leading up to this week’s stock, the bite has been best on PowerBait fished on very light line. The winter crappie bite may also be starting. There have been a few crappie reports this week with the fish showing on small minnows. Other species are very slow. Fishing information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or bobsbaitbucket.com.

WOOLLOMES LAKE: Overall slow fishing with few reports.

SUCCESS LAKE: The bass bite has been slow to fair on plastics and reaction baits, but most of the fish are small. Few other reports. The new marina is in operation. Information: Sequoia Fishing Company at 559-539-5626, sequoiafishingcompany.com.

KAWEAH LAKE: The bass bite is still fair on drop-shot plastics or nightcrawlers. Other species have slowed. Launch ramp open. Information: Sierra Sporting Goods at 559-592-5212.
