Fish Report-Freshwater, April 22

SALTON SEA: The tilapia bite remains good when the wind isn’t blowing hard (and it has been since the weekend). The size of the fish is still small, but catches of 50 to 100 fish per angler for a day of fishing were common again over the weekend. Most of the fish are half- to three-quarter pounders. Top spots have been the┬ástate park headquarters jetty (and the inside of the marina is now open to fishing, too) and the adjacent Salton Sea Yacht Club jetty in North Shore. No reports from other locations. The bite has been on nightcrawler pieces. Dredging has resumed one day a week at the state park launch ramp and marina. The park entrance fee is $5 with self-registration. Dredging at the state park launch ramp was stopped before completion because of bird nesting season, so the ramp may be closed this year (the only ramp currently on the sea). The water has dropped so much that launching was nearly impossible except for small boats (boaters should check with the main office at the recreation area before bringing a boat). The camp store is open Friday through Sunday. Volunteers are needed to work in the visitor center. They get free camping and hookups. Information: Camp Store at (760) 289-9455 (open Friday-Sunday).
