SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good trout action continues with weekly plants on Thursday. Top fish this past week was a 13-8 landed by Kevin Smith, Harbor City, on a Lip RipperZ worm at the Bubble Hole. Rudy Ochoa, Whittier, landed an 11-8, while Tony Lopez, East Los Angeles, had an 11-pounder. There will be a blue catfish plant this week and 24-hour fishing Friday and Saturday nights this week. The lake complex is closed every Thursday (the day of the weekly trout plants) to give the fish a chance to acclimate and spread around the lake. Information: (714) 632-7851.

IRVINE LAKE: Good trout action this past week, along with a number of quality Nebraska Tailwalkers. Top fish reported was a 14-1 landed by Rich Varela, Downey, on a nightcrawler off the west shoreline.Danius Westfield, Anaheim, landed a 10-pound rainbow, and Bill Wright, Orange, had a 9-10.  Eric Rangel, Orange, had a 9-5 Tailwalker, while James Martinez, Whittier, landed an 8-8 Tailwalker. Ken Yu, Anaheim, landed an 8-5 rainbow, while Gabriel Martinez, Whittier, had an 8-4 Tailwalker. The trout were best along the west shore, Trout Island, and at mid-lake for trollers. PowerBait and nightcrawlers were the best baits. Bass have been very good with most of the fish in less than 10 feet of water and showing on plastics and shad-like jerk baits. Don Spencer, Silverado, had a 4-8 bass on a plastic. Catfish and bluegill are also pretty decent for anglers targeting these species. Information: (714) 649-9111 or go to irvinelake.net. 

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: Warming water temperatures have pushed the trout to deeper water at the dam and the bubble holes. Best bite has been early and late in the day, especially for shore anglers, while float tubers are getting fish on the flats. Dale Bruette, Lake Forest, landed a 5-4 rainbow, while Mark Helmueller, Austin, Tex., had a 5-4. The last trout plant of the season went in last week (March 25). Information: (949) 362-9227.
