SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good catfish action with weekly plants. Shrimp and nightcrawlers have been the top baits. Javier Osevera, La Habra, landed a 7-8 cat for the best fish of the week. Pedro Villa, Anaheim, had five cats totaling 15-4 on nightcrawlers at the boat dock.  Art Reyer, Anaheim, landed six cafish totaling 16 pounds using shrimp. Mike Manley, Anaheim, fished shrimp in the big lake for his 10 cats averaging two pounds each. Catfish and tilapia are now stocked twice a week. The official catfish opener will be June 13-15 and trophy catfish are scheduled to go in just before that event. Night fishing every Friday and Saturday night now. Information: 714-632-7851.

IRVINE LAKE: Catfish season officially opens here this week with the first plant of the season and night fishing starting this Friday, and night fishing allowed each Thursday, Friday and Saturday night after this week. A 50-pound blue catfish was caught over the weekend by Eric Hagen, Santa Ana, fishing a mackerel fillet at mid-day. The bite has been good on shrimp at Rocky Point and Santiago flats with limits showing for the diligent. Terry Lairson, Anaheim, had a 13-2 channel. Trout anglers fishing deep water with three to six colors of leadcore and Needlefish at the dam are getting a few fish. Jesse Gould, Orange, landed an 11-1 rainbow on a Power Worm mid lake. Bass remain good with a lot of fish to four pounds on topwater, rip baits, reaction baits, and plastics. Bill Nelson, Orange, landed a 7-1 bass on a plastic off the west shore.
