Fish Report-Freshwater, Nov. 26

SILVERWOOD: Copper sulfate (bluestone) treatment last Tuesday slowed the striper swimbait bite and most other action, but it hasn’t slowed the trout bite. The trout have been showing in good numbers on floating dough baits and small jigs, especially around the marina, Cleghorn, and Miller canyons. Most recent trout plant was last week and there was also a DFW plant three weeks ago. A few catfish and small stripers continue to show in deeper water off the marina docks and at the dam. Jose and Eddie Perez, Azusa, had a mixed stringer of 10 stripers and catfish to five pounds on sardine and anchovies from a boat near the dam. The largemouth bass bite slowed way down again with only a few showing on plastics in deeper structure and drop-offs. Bluegill and crappie have been very slow. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. BIG BEAR LAKE: Winter season fishing is in full swing. In the early morning from six to 10 a.m., the trout are close to shore in six to 14 feet of water. The best bite is early along the north shore (Red House region) on garlic or salmon egg-flavored PowerBait in red, chartreuse, and rainbow colors fished on three or four-foot leaders. The dam area boulders have also been producing fish on fly-line nightcrawlers or PowerBait on a slip bobber. Slow-trolling is still good in the Trout Triangle with nightcrawlers and a Wedding Ring, but the ramps will all close after Thanksgiving weekend.
