SILVERWOOD: All the bites are starting to take off here. The largemouth bass are starting to move up in a major movement of pre-spawn fish. Not many up real shallow and fanning beds, yet, the bite is fair to good on plastics and swimbaits. The stripers are also still fair to good for anglers trolling flies or tossing swimbaits with dam-inlet area, the mouth of Cleghorn and Miller canyons, and the main lake points. The stripers are running up to five pounds, but a 17-pounder was landed by Gil Oropez, Corona, on in the channel with a deep-diving bait. He also had a pair of three-pound class fish. The trout also have been good, and a DFW plant went in last week. The trout are best in Cleghorn and Sawpit areas, with PowerBait, inflated nightcrawlers, and small trout plastics all producing fish. A few catfish showing, but this bite is mostly slow. Anglers should be aware of health advisories for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.
BIG BEAR LAKE: The trout action continues to be good. The North Shore, between old Grayís Landing and the buoy line, is where shoreline anglers are consistently getting trout. The best tactic has been to use garlic and salmon eff-flavored PowerBaits on a short Carolina Rig. Water temps range from 38 to 41 degrees and the fish are cruising close to shore (30 to 40 feet off the shoreline).
