SILVERWOOD: The striper bite has been fair to good. Most anglers are getting a few fish on sardines at the dam, the inlet, and up the main channel. Meanwhile, the anglers fishing trolled flies are hammering the stripers with fish to five pounds reported. Mike Southerland, a guide from Hemet, had two clients who’ve taken limits of fish to 5 pounds this past week while “fly-coring” — trolling shad-like flies on lead line. Josh Miller of Phelan had three stripers to four pounds fishing sardines off the marina rocks. There is also the odd catfish showing in this bite. Jeff Banks, Adelanto, landed a three-pound cat on mackerel off the dock. The trout action remains fair and a DFW plant was slated for this week. The last plant was Jan. 5 in Cleghorn. The best action has been on inflated nightcrawlers and PowerBait, with some on small jigs. Largemouth bass are very slow with only a few on plastics or jigs in deeper water. Anglers should be aware of health advisories for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood.
