San Diego Area Lakes, April 27 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Dixon Lake’s last plant of the season was a 4,500-pound plant last week for the Kiwanis Trout Derby this past weekend. Jennings received 1,500 pounds of trout last week, it’s final plant, and a 1,700-pound plant three weeks ago. Poway received its final plant of the year last week, a double plant of 2,800 pounds, and it received 1,500 pounds three weeks ago. Wohlford got its final plant last week and it was also planted three weeks ago. Both plants were 1,500 pounds. Cuyamaca got a 1,200-pound plant this week. There will be two stocks in May and two more in June.

DFW trout were planted in Cuyamaca, Doane Pond, and Morena this week. Lake Murray was planted last week, and there plants last two weeks ago in Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca, Lindo Lake, and Morena.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is generally fair to good with most of the fish past the spawn now. Lots of fish showing on plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay and San Vicente remain good, but Murray, Wohlford, and Jennings are also pretty good. Trout also remain a good bet but trout season is winding down with most waters getting final plants of the season last week. Top bets for trout are Cuyamaca, Dixon, Jennings, Poway, and Wohlford. The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. Very good panfish action at San Vicente and Murray with the fish moving shallow for the spawn.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 27 anglers reported 63 bass. At Hodges, 47 anglers reported six bass, three bluegill, and one channel catfish. At Miramar, 13 anglers reported 22 bass and six bluegill. At Murray, 18 anglers had two bass. At Lower Otay, 58 anglers reported 214 bass, 397 bluegill, seven redear, and 12 crappie. At San Vicente, 43 anglers reported 168 bass and 20 bluegill. At Sutherland, 15 anglers reported 11 bass, one crappie, and one carp. No other reports.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Thomas Aranda and Tony Wiggins, San Diego, had 16 bass to 5.5 pounds on live shiner.
