San Diego Area Lakes, April 6 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Dixon Lake will receive a 4,500-pound plant this week, and its last plant of the season will be April 19, another 4,500-pound plant. Dixon Lake will be closed to all fishing beginning Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. and re-open at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 22 for the 20th Annual Kiwanis Trout Derby. Jennings will get 1,700 pounds of trout this week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of rainbows last week, and its final plant of the year will be April 19th — a double plant of 2,800 pounds. Wohlford will get a plant of 1,500 pounds this week and it was planted two weeks ago. Cuyamaca will get a 1,200-pound plant next Tuesday.

DFW trout plants last week included Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is generally fair to good with most fish spawning now. Lower Otay and San Vicente have been particularly good, but Murray, Wohlford, and Jennings are also pretty good. Trout also remain a good bet with many lakes getting weekly stocks or plants alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Dixon, Jennings, Poway and Wohlford. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. Very good panfish action at San Vicente and Murray with the fish moving shallow for the spawn.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes fish usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, there were 25 anglers checked who reported 54 bass. At Hodges, 72 anglers reported just seven bass and three channel catfish. At Miramar, 25 anglers reported 47 bass to 3.8 pounds. No other reports.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Cuyamaca, Tom Curtis, San Gabriel, landed a 12-pound rainbow using green garlic PowerBait off the west finger jetty, while Joseph Woof, Lakeside, had a 9-12 to top off his 19-pound limit.
