San Diego Area Lakes, Aug. 10 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: A 1,000-pound catfish plants went into Lake Jennings last week, with additional 1,000-pound plants slated for the weeks of Aug. 14, and Aug. 28. Dixon and Wohlford also received catfish last week, and it was the last plant of the season for Wohlford. Poway received 1,300 pounds last week and will get another stock the week of Aug. 18.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the bluegill and redear action is also still fair to good at most lakes and probably still holds the top billing. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger. Lower Otay and Hodges have been hotspots and some fish continue to weigh more than a pound. Also pretty good bluegill bites at Barrett, San Vicente, Murray, El Capitan, and Jennings. Barrett took a nosedive for bass this past week due to heat and water conditions, but Lower Otay has been fair to good with fish to four pounds reported. Morena, El Capitan, San Vicente, and Hodges also remain pretty good on bass, with topwater action most mornings and evenings, but still mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is pretty much over except at Cuyamaca, which has been OK in deeper water on floating baits and inflated nightcrawlers. Catfish season is in full swing at most waters with some good catches being reported at all the lakes.
