San Diego Area Lakes, Feb. 16 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Poway received 1,500 pounds this week, and this plant included trophy fish. It will be planted again March 1 and 15. Dixon Lake had a 1,500-pound plant last week and will stocked with an equal amount of fish next week. Jennings was stocked last week and will get another 1,500 pounds next week. Wohlford was planted with 1,500 pounds of trout last week and will get trout again Feb. 22. Cuyamaca was planted with 1,200 pounds Tuesday this week. There are no DFW trout plants for this week, but trout were planted last week at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Murray, Lindo Lake and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: Warm weather this past week sparked the bass fishing throughout the region, with many fish caught in shallower water and on more active baits. The best, however, is still in deeper water on plastics, jigs, jigging spoons, or live bait. Even with the uptick in bass fishing, trou8t remain the best bet with many lakes getting stocks alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Poway (trophy fish this week), Cuyamaca, with Dixon, Jennings, and Wohlford the next best bets. Top bets for bass remain Lower Otay, San Vicente, Murray and El Capitan. The panfish bites are mostly off, but a few bluegill and crappie continue to show from Otay.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff surveyed 19 anglers at El Capitan this past week and landed 32 bass. At Hodges, 53 anglers checked reported just 11 bass, three crappie, and one channel catfish. At Miramar, 15 anglers checked had 44 bass to 4.25 pounds. At Lower Otay, 50 anglers landed 136 bass to four pounds, 36 crappie, 30 bluegill to 1-8, and two channel catfish.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Wohlford, Suzanne Jakovac of Escondido had a 10.7-pound rainbow on green PowerBait in Oakvale Cove, while Allen Reyes of Escondido topped off his 11.9-pound limit of rainbows with a four-pounder.
