San Diego Area Lakes, March 16 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Poway received trout this week and two weeks ago. Dixon Lake received a 1,500-pound plant this week and should get an equal amount next week. Wohlford was planted with 1,500 pounds last week, and Cuyamaca was planted with 1,200 pounds last week. Morena also received 1,000 pounds of Jess Ranch rainbows last week. Jennings was planted with 1,700 pounds two weeks ago.

DFW trout plants for this week include Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is breaking wide open with the warm weather as the fish move shallow for the coming spawn. There has been a major movement of fish on most the countyĆs lakes. Lower Otay has been particularly good, but San Vicente and Jennings are also really turning on. Even with the uptick in bass fishing, trout remain a good bet with many lakes getting weekly stocks or plants alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Dixon and Jennings, but Poway and Wohlford are good bets. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are mostly off, but a few bluegill and crappie continue to show from Otay.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff surveyed 27 anglers at El Capitan this past week and they landed 47 bass. At Hodges, 86 anglers reported just four bass and seven channel cats. At Miramar, 14 anglers checked had 43 bass to 4.3 pounds. At Lower Otay, 69 anglers reported 194 bass, 64 bluegill, and 12 crappie. At Sutherland, 29 anglers had 16 bass.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Ger Lee, Sanger, had a seven-pound bass on a swimbait west of the boat dock.
