San Diego Area Lakes, March 2 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Poway was slated to get a trout plant this week and March 15. Dixon Lake received a 1,500-pound plant this week and should get an equal amount next week. Jennings is slated for a 1,700-pound plant this week and it received 1,500 pounds last week, including some fish to 10-pounds-plus. Wohlford also received 1,500 pounds last week and is slated for another 1,500-pound plant March 8. Cuyamaca is scheduled to get a 1,200-pound plant next.

DFW trout plants for last week included Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Murray, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir. No plants this week.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing continues to improve throughout the region, with many fish moving into shallower water in a major pre-spawn movement of fish. Lower Otay has been particularly good, but San Vicente is also really turning on. Even with the uptick in bass fishing, trout remain the best bet with many lakes getting stocks alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Dixon and Jennings, but Poway and Wohlford are good bets. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are mostly off, but a few bluegill and crappie continue to show from Otay.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff surveyed 17 anglers at El Capitan this past week and they landed 37 bass. At Hodges, 75 anglers checked reported just eight crappie and seven bass. At Miramar, 13 anglers checked had 35 bass to 3.85 pounds. At Lower Otay, 79 anglers reported 324 bass, 27 bluegill, and 15 crappie.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Wohlford, Evan Esancy, Maine, landed a 12-8 rainbow on a nightcrawler. Tim Arnold, Fallbrook, had a 12-6 on a crankbait at the east buoys. Lastly, an 8-3 bass was caught by Jason Kordan, Torrance, on a swimbait off Bass Point. At Jennings, Chris Moll, Lakeside, had two rainbows at 6-8 and 5-12, both on mini jigs near the boat dock. At Murray, Damien Alton, San Diego, had a 1.5-pound bluegill on a nightcrawler from Cowles Bay.
