San Diego Area Lakes, March 9 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Poway received trout last week and will get fish again next week. Dixon Lake received a 1,500-pound plant this week and should get an equal amount next week. Jennings was planted with 1,700 pounds last week. Wohlford was on the docket to get 1,500 pounds this week. Cuyamaca is scheduled to get a 1,200-pound plant this week.

DFW trout plants for two weeks ago included Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Murray, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir. No plants this week, but Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake and Morena Reservoir are on the list for next week.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is breaking wide open with the warm weather as the fish move shallow for the coming spawn. There has been a major movement of fish on most the county’s lakes. Lower Otay has been particularly good, but San Vicente and Jennings are also really turning on. Even with the uptick in bass fishing, trout remain a good bet with many lakes getting weekly stocks or plants alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Dixon and Jennings, but Poway and Wohlford are good bets. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are mostly off, but a few bluegill and crappie continue to show from Otay.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff surveyed 16 anglers at El Capitan this past week and they landed 34 bass. At Miramar, 16 anglers checked had 46 bass to 14.8 pounds. At Lower Otay, 80 anglers reported 310 bass to five pounds and 19 crappie. At Sutherland, 34 anglers had three bass.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Miramar, Joe Ahrens, Mira Mesa, caught and released a 14.8-pound largemouth bass. At San Vicente, Matt Green, El Cajon, caught and released eight bass to 5-8 on Senkos, with the big one in the Kimball Arm. At Jennings, Dave Wolsast, Santee, and Jim Rogers, Clairemont, had a 21-pound, 10-trout stringer with the top rainbow a three-pounder.
