San Diego Area Lakes, May 18 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Only Lake Cuyamaca is still being stocked with private trout, and its most recent plant was 1,200 pounds last week and another stocked will go in May 30. DFW trout are slated also went in last week at Cuyamaca Lake, Doane Pond, and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the big news is the wide open bluegill bite at Lower Otay Reservoir where anglers are getting full 25-fish limits for the third week in a row. Many topping a pound. Also pretty decent bluegill bites at San Vicente, Murray, Jennings, and Sutherland, with good catches reported at all four. Bass were wide open for the Barrett Lake for the second week in a row. They were reported on just about everything, from topwater to deep jigs and plastics. Morena, Lower Otay, El Capitan, and San Vicente also remain pretty good on bass, mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is winding down, but there continues to be some good action at Cuyamaca and Morena. Jennings is also pretty fair. Most of the bites are in deeper water as the surface temperatures warm up.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At Barrett, 333 anglers reported 7,265 bass and 175 crappie. At El Capitan, 67 anglers reported 62 bass and two bluegill. At Miramar, 14 anglers reported 24 bass and 2 bluegill to a pound. At San Vicente, 51 anglers reported 181 bass and 22 bluegill. At Sutherland, 21 anglers reported nine bass.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Lake Murray, Adam Fetner, San Diego, caught a 10-pound bass on a shiner, while Roy Wood, San Diego, was flyfishing Padre Bay and landed a 5-pound, 15-ounce bass along with five bluegill. At Wohlford, Justin Kennedy, Valley Center, caught and released an 8.3-pound bass on a plastic worm off the senior shoreline.

    Why have you posted San Diego Lakes review in the Los Angeles Lakes area? Where is the LA report?
