San Diego Area Lakes, May 4 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Only Lake Cuyamaca is still being stocked with trout, and it’s last plant was this past week, and 1,200-pound plants will also go in May 9 and May 30. Dixon Lake’s last plant was two weeks ago (4,500 pounds). Jennings last plant was two weeks ago (1,500 pounds). Poway’s final plant of 2,800 pounds was two weeks ago. Wohlford’s last plant was two weeks ago (1,500 pounds).

DFW trout were planted in Cuyamaca, Doane Pond, and Morena last week, while Lake Murray was planted two weeks ago.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the big news is the wide open bluegill bite at Lower Otay Reservoir where over 500 bluegill were reported with fish to nearly two pounds weighed in. Also pretty decent bluegill bites at San Vicente, Murray, and Sutherland. Bass are best at Lower Otay and San Vicente, mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is winding down, but there continues to be some good action at Cuyamaca and Morena. Jennings is also pretty fair. Most of the bites are in deeper water as the surface temperatures warm up.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 41 anglers reported 88 bass. At Hodges, 84 anglers reported just eight bass and 12 bluegill. At Miramar, 20 anglers reported 37 bass to four pounds and four bluegill to a pound. At Lower Otay, 78 anglers reported 220 bass to 5.8 pounds, 541 bluegill to 1.8 pounds, eight crappie, and four redear. At San Vicente, 36 anglers report 100 bass and 14 bluegill. At Sutherland, 12 anglers reported eight bass, six bluegill, two crappie, and two carp.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Morena, Terri Lassaline, Campo, landed a 6.5-pound rainbow. Also reported a 13-pound bass from Morena. At Cuyamaca, Matt and Garrett Mead, both Santee, used fly gear to catch limits of trout and their top fish was a 6.5-pounds.
