TOP NEWS: Heat has continued to put a major damper on the fishing activity all along the river again this week. Temperatures have been over 110 or more at most places. Few anglers have been braving this heat, but those fishing, the bite has been good for most species across the board. In Havasu and Mohave, the bites are good on stripers, largemouth, smallmouth, and panfish. All three species of bass are up chasing baitfish early and late in the day, and stripers are starting to move uplake into the river. More and more quality fish are showing in the Needles to Davis Dam and the Willow Beach stretches. Also still a lot of smaller fish in the Needles to Davis stretch. Most of the black bass action in less than 20 feet of water early and late in the day, but there has been some movement deeper with the heat. Still, the surface and near-surface action on topwater and reaction baits has been the best top bet early and then plastics, deeper-running cranks, and swimbaits later. The bluegill and redear bites are still pretty good. All the lakes and backwaters are now producing a lot of fish. Quality redear in Havasu and Topoc Gorge have been the rule with fish to three pounds. Bluegill are also good in the lower river backwaters, especially the Palo Verde Lagoon, Pretty Water, Cibola, and Martinez Lake areas. Lots of ëgills to three-quarter pound. The flathead catfish bite in the lower river is also very consistent with a lot of 15 to 20-pound flatheads, but just little fishing pressure and very few fish reported this past week. The bite has been all on live bluegill or goldfish. The channel catfish bite is also good to excellent, especially in the river stretches, but also in all the reservoirs and backwaters.
