Colorado River, March 3 report

TOP NEWS: Still relatively light fishing pressure all along the Colorado River. The top bites have been the striper action in Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu, with a fair number of fish in the river between the two. Mohave still has been the best bite, but the action is just fair overall. In Lake Mohave, the fish are showing in the mouths of coves and off points from Katherine’s Landing to the dam. Most are one to three pounders, but there are eight to 15 pounders in this action. The warm weather also has the fish starting to move around. In Havasu, the bite is also in the southern end of the lake, mostly on cut baits in deep water. Some stripers are also showing below Davis Dam in the river around Bullhead City. Trout action remains pretty good in the Davis Camp and Rotary Park areas after plants three weeks ago. Most are pan-sized, but some to three pounds. Small spinners or spoons have been the best baits. Other species mostly slow. The largemouth bass bite is starting to turn on all along the river, but especially in the lower river backwaters and deeper coves on Lake Havasu. Cibola Lake will open to fishing March 15. There is a pre-spawn movement of fish into the shallows and the bite is pretty good on plastic worms, nightcrawlers, and some reaction bait action. The smallmouth bass in the lower river have also been starting to perk along the rip-rap from Parker Dam to Palo Verde. Most are showing on crawdad-like jigs or cranksbaits.
