LAKE MEAD: Fishing for stripers fair to good on smaller fish in South Cove and other coves at the south end of the lake. Catches of channel catfish have also been good. Cats from one to two pounds are being caught on cut baits. Most stripers are between one and two pounds and the best bait has been cut up gizzard shad, anchovies, sardines or shrimp. Fish are mostly in coves along steep canyon walls in 50 to 80 feet of water. The largemouth bass bite has been fair to good with a lot of fish on topwater early and late in the day, plastics the rest of the day in deeper water. 

WILLOW BEACH: Very light fishing pressure and few reports. A few stripers from 12 to 20 pounds have been reported on big swimbaits. For fishing information: Willow Beach Resort at 928-767-4747.

LAKE MOHAVE: Fair to good action on smallmouth and largemouth bass on plastics and nightcrawlers on the shelves from the dam up past the power lines. Bluegill and redear have also been pretty good near the dam on nightcrawlers. Stripers are fair at the dam and from the Power Lines up to Katherine’s and most of the coves. Anchovies have been the top bait, but a few fish are showing on topwater and reaction baits early in the day. The catfish bite is fair to good in most coves, especially at night on cut baits. LAUGHLIN-BULLHEAD AREA: Fair to good catfish and striped bass action in this stretch of the river, from the dam all the way down to Needles. The top baits for both have been anchovies. The bite slowed a little this past week but was improving again at mid-week. Justin Smith, Bullhead, landed a 6.58-pound striper on a swimbait. Most of the stripers are one to three pounds, but some bigger fish are showing on Pencil Poppers. Top catfish reported was a 9.2-pounder landed by Daniel Fields, Bullhead, on anchovies. After a political battle to keep plants going into this part of the Colorado River, the first trout plant of the fall is slated for Oct. 4 at Davis Camp, with a special event planned. NEEDLES-TOPOC REGION: Largemouth bass action has been fair in the marsh with nightcrawlers and spinnerbaits producing quite a few fish, but most are small. Lots of topwater action with the warm weather, but mostly at dawn and dusk. The smallmouth bite is fair in the main river and gorge areas. The bluegill and redear bite is good, mostly on nightcrawlers. Stripers in the main river are fair to good, mostly on cut baits, but some bigger fish on swimbaits and topwater plugs. Channel cats are fair to good in both the main river and backwaters, and the marsh has been good for cats. You can access the marsh by boat at the North Dike, Catfish Paradise, and Five-Mile Landing. LAKE HAVASU: There has been fair action on smallmouth and largemouth bass, with the best bite the early and late topwater bite on frogs and buzz baits but the crankbait bite is improving. The stripers are fair to good with the fish following the schools of gizzard shad and larger lures in the five to 10-inch range are best. The redear have been fair to good with a lot of fish up to three pounds. Most are around a pound or better. Catfish fair to good in the coves with a lot of two to four-pound fish and some to 10-plus pounds on cut baits, especially at night and dawn and dusk.

PARKER STRIP: Catfish are fair to good on cut baits, and the flatheads are still pretty fair.

BLYTHE: Very light fishing pressure, but the catfish bite has been fair all along the lower Colorado River. Monsoon rains again have muddied up the water in some areas, but it’s been clearing pretty quickly. Top baits for the flatheads are live bluegill and goldfish. The canals are as good as the main river. Lots of six to 20-pound fish reported. The channel catfish bite is also good on cut baits. The bass bite has been fair on plastics and nightcrawlers in the backwaters, and in the main river the smallmouth are fair to good on small cranks, especially in the stretches with rip-rap. The bluegill bite is fair to good in most areas. Mosquitos are bad so bring the bug juice. Information: B&B Bait 760-921-2248.    

PALO VERDE: Light fishing pressure, but the few anglers fishing are finding pretty good catfish action for both flathead to 15 pounds and channel catfish. The largemouth bass are fair to good in the backwaters and lagoon, mostly on topwater or reaction baits early and late in the day. The smallmouth are also good in the main river on crawdad-colored cranks and jigs. The bluegill are fair to good with some fish topping a half-pound in the lagoon. PICACHO AREA: The bass have been fair to good with the best bite on plastics and live baits and some topwater early and late. The catfish bite is good with more and more flatheads including quality fish topping 25 pounds, and the channels are showing in very good numbers on cut baits. The bluegill bite is good now. Light fishing pressure.

MARTINEZ LAKE AREA: Largemouth bass action has been fair to good with the fish whacking live baits and plastics. Lots of topwater action early and late in the day. Flathead catfish are very good on live bluegill and goldfish. Channel catfish action is good on stink baits. Bluegill are good, mostly in the mornings and evenings. YUMA AREA: Largemouth bass action has been good in area backwaters. Most anglers are fishing live bait or plastics, but the topwater bite has been the best bet early and late. Fair bluegill action in most backwaters. The channel catfish action is fair to good on cut bait and stink baits, and the flathead action is also good on live goldfish and bluegill.
