Eastern Sierra, April 20 Report

GENERAL UPDATE: General trout season will open April 29, and many waters in Inyo and Mono counties remain open year-around. Anglers should check the regulations on open waters and special restrictions. The early trout opener was March 4 on Inyo County waters south of (and including) Independence Creek and west of Highway 395. In the year-around waters, the lower Owens River below Pleasant Valley Reservoir has continued to have very high flows of over 700 cfs for the past several weeks. These are tough fishing flows. Very few trout showing for anglers fishing nymphs near the bottom with lots of lead. The East Walker flows finally dropped to 350 cfs after nearly two weeks of flows over 480 cfs. Fishing is still tough, but this flow is a little better. Light pressure and only the odd trout reported on nymphs or streamers swung through the quieter side channels. The West Walker flows have been from just under 500 cfs to over 900 cfs the past week. The flow Wednesday afternoon was 750 cfs. Light fishing pressure, but a few browns and rainbows coming from quieter water in the bigger pools.

The top spot in the region continues to be the Owens River above Crowley. There are a lot of big rainbows from 16 to 22 inches or more up out of Crowley in the Hot Fingers stretch of the Owens River. Access remains pretty good. Anglers should still call one of the shops in the region for the latest information.
