On May 1, an angler aboard Western Pride out of Davey’s Locker landed an opah. These fish are occasionally caught in our local waters in September or October, in warm water years. Rarely as early as July one is landed. May? Never. And there’s more: Barracuda made an early showing in the Channel Islands last week, and there are huge schools of small barracuda along the Los Angeles and Orange County coastline. Add in that skippers seeing red crabs and Spanish mackerel already, and this could be shaping up as a great warm-water fishing season, with dorado, yellowfin and yellowtail thick in local waters.
