Benefit on the Bay Bottom Fishing Tournament Scheduled for May 3


SAN DIEGO — Southwestern Yacht Club has announced the 44th annual Benefit on the Bay Bottom Fishing Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 3. Anglers can fish for a cause as all proceeds from the tournament benefit Elderhelp.            

Last year the Bottom Fishing Tournament raised $11,115 for ElderHelp, a local organization supporting our seniors with assistance allowing them to stay in their homes and function independently. Southwestern YC donated a total of $21,511 to the organization as a result of several events held.            

Join the yacht club for this year’s event that includes the Benefit on the Bay Sunset Soiree Gala on Saturday, April 5, followed by the 27th annual Charity Bay Race and Regatta on Sunday, April 6 and the Bottom Fishing Tournament on Saturday, May 3.             The Bottom Fishing Tournament begins with a buffet breakfast at Southwesten YC from 5-7 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 with a shotgun start at 7a.m. Weigh in is at 4 p.m.. Weigh in for Mission Bay boats is 4:30 p.m.            

Following the tournament, all fish weighed in are made into a scrumptious dinner by Chesapeake Fish volunteers who filet the catch. Anglers will munch on corn on the cob and salad with fellow anglers, family and guests. Then everyone will help celebrate tournament winners and participate in a raffle.            

Last year, although many boats did not make it past Zuniga Jetty due to the weather, 21 of the 37 boats weighed in fish. The club honors went to Southwestern YC with Skete Simmons’ Concubine and Steve Pinard’s Impulse weighing in rock cod with total weights of 21.45 and 20.55 pounds respectively. Brett Weinberg on Tuna Jihad won the men’s division with a 5.4 pound rock cod. Cameron Lapham on Snooper weighed in a 4.65 pounder to win the junior’s division. Pat Woodard on the Christina Lynn and Denise Huff on the Sublimely Hooked with a 4.65 pound fish topped the lady’s division.            

Registration forms received prior to April 20 will qualify for an early bird registration fee of $65 as well as entry into a drawing. Registration fee on or after April 20 is $75. Juniors (under 16) entry fee is $25,            

Entry fee includes breakfast, tournament t-shirt, one free beer ticket, and awards banquet, live and silent auctions, and entry into the drawing for prizes.
