SANTA BARBARA COUNTY — The 17th annual Trout Derby at Lake Cachuma is scheduled for April 14-15, and anglers will be competing for more than $5,000 in cash prizes.
Approximately 4,000 pounds of trout will be planted the day before the tournament, to increase the action.
Each year, close to 500 children ages 10 and younger and 300 adults from all over Southern California and Central California compete for the biggest trout catch of the day. In addition to the cash prizes, thousands of dollars worth of merchandise will be awarded to anglers.
Derby fishing begins at 6 a.m. April 14 and ends at noon April 15. Contestants may fish from shore at any time during the derby, including Saturday night. A flare will be fired in the harbor at the start and completion of the derby.
The annual trout derby is a major fundraiser for the Neal Taylor Nature Center at Cachuma Lake. The cost is $40 for adults; $10 for children 10 and younger.
