The calico bass action has been very good in the San Diego to Dana Point region, on local kelp beds and at both San Clemente Island and Catalina Island. While vast numbers of the fish being caught are under the new 14-inch minimum size requirement, there are also a lot of fish over the minimum size. Premier out of H&M Landing was out June 17 with 15 anglers, and they had 44 keeper calicos, 18 mackerel and six rockfish. They also had 160 calicos that were released. Reel Fun out of Dana Wharf was on a pair of half-day trips, and the 70 anglers on those two trips had 27 keeper calicos, 10 keeper sand bass, one sheephead and one sculpin. They released 376 calicos.
