SANTEE — The annual Santee Lakes Catfish Opening Weekend returns to the northeast San Diego County watering hole, with anglers kicking off the 2017 season on April 1.
The two-day weekend opener will feature 2,000 pounds of catfish. Anglers with the five largest catches will be eligible to win a prize.
Santee Lakes’ officials expect to plant 24,000 pounds of catfish throughout the season, which runs for seven months (April 1 to Oct. 31).
Opening weekend festivities begin April 1 and continue through April 2.
Anglers only need a Santee Lakes’ fishing license to drop a line in the water; state licenses are not required at Santee Lakes.
Anyone catching a tagged catfish could win prizes such as fishing poles, tackle boxes and free passes to Santee Lakes.
