Fishing Picks of the Week

1. Staying the top pick, the Salton Sea tilapia bite is still wide open and the quality of fish has improved in recent days with more fish in the 1.5-pound range this week. The afternoon bite was better than the morning bite this past week, but afternoon anglers were reporting full ice chests full of fish. Most of the reports continue to come from the State Park headquarters jetty. As always, the best bite has been on small pieces of nightcrawler. For an update on the action call the Salton Sea State Recreation Area main office at 760-393-3059

2. The trout action at Big Bear Lake is staying in the top picks this week. Trophy fish to six pounds or better from the May Trout Classic two weeks ago continue to show and limits of pan-sized rainbows continue to be very common. For an update on this bite check with Big Bear Sporting Goods at 909-866-3222 or visit the store’s Facebook page.

3. The largemouth bass bite at Diamond Valley Lake is in the top picks this week. With the launch ramp reopening last week, local anglers are again able to fish this popular lake. It hasn’t been disappointing. While kept pretty quiet, the bass are good to excellent with a lot of fish to six pounds reported by anglers tossing plastics, shad-like baits of all kinds, and even nightcrawlers. As a side note, the bluegill and redear bites are also both very good. For an update on the action call the marina at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait and Tackle in Hemet at 951-658-7410.
