1. The Eastern Sierra Nevada trout opener is Saturday and the action should be excellent in all the usual places thanks to big plants by the DFW and private groups. All of the major waters are ice-free and most major roads are open. The weather should be windy, but otherwise good. Top spots will be Crowley Lake, Convict Lake, all the waters in the June Lake Loop, Bridgeport Reservoir, and the Twin Lakes near Bridgeport. For an update on the action, call Ken’s Sporting Goods 760-932-7707 or visit www.kenssport.com for the Bridgeport region, Silver Lake Resort at 760-648-7726 or at silverlakeresort.net or Ernie’s Tackle at 760-648-7756 for the June Lake region, The Troutfitter at 760-934-2517 for Mammoth region updates, or Culverís Sporting Goods at 760-872-8361 for the Bishop region.
2. It’s still “Striper Mania” at the California Aqueduct near Taft and anglers are still finding it almost too easy to have 25-fish-plus days. While most are under the 18-inch minimum size, the two-fish limits is pretty easy to get. The best bite is on cut sardines, but fish are also showing on blood worms, lug worms, anchovies, Gitzits, and Senkos. For an update on the action, contact Bob’s Bait Bucket in Bakersfield at 661-833-8657. Also check out “Poor Man Aqueduct Fishing” on Facebook.
3. Silverwood Lake has received six bonus load of DFW rainbow trout over the past two weeks and more are slated to go in this week. Some of the rainbows have been quality fish topping two pounds and five-fish limits have been almost too easy. Small lures or floating dough baits are the best bets, and around the marina and canyons on both sides of the launch ramp have been the hotspots. For an update on the bite, call the Silverwood marina at 760-389-2299.
