Fishing Picks of the Week

1. A Beat the Heat Pick: Big Bear Lake has been very good for rainbow trout this past week, and it has been much cooler up in the San Bernardino Mountains than the scalding temperatures in the desert and valleys. A lot of the trout are bigger holdovers and plants from a recent tournament. In fact big trout this past week was more than 15 pounds. Both trollers and shore anglers are getting into these fish. 2. The Lake Mohave striped bass bite on the Colorado River remains in the top picks, in spite of 110-degree temperatures in recent days. There continue to be a lot of fish up into the 12-pound class showing for shore and boat anglers fishing cut baits and shad-like swimbaits from Katherine’s Landing to the dam. 3. The Castaic Lake striper bite has been consistently good for the anglers who know how to drift bait or troll. Guide Bob Caffey been hammering them with his clients. While a lot of the fish are 12- to 14-inchers, until water flow into the lake spiked in recent days, there was a lot of 6- to 10-pound or bigger stripers in this bite, too.
