1. Rockfish season reopened two weeks ago south of Point Conception, and the bite has been exceptional for anglers fishing on boats running out of the Oxnard, Santa Barbara, and Ventura landings. Limits of rockfish — with some good catches of whitefish and a few ling cod mixed in — have been the rule on everything from half-day to overnight jaunts. 2. Cachuma Lake received a big trout plant this week AND the crappie bite appears to be taking off. Rainbows to 6 pounds have already been reported, and shore and boat anglers are both cashing in. The crappie bite is best on small jigs tipped with bait or Crappie Nibbles and fish to 1-8 have been caught. For an update on the bite and best places to fish, check with the marina staff at 805-688-4040.
3. The trout action at Big Bear Lake is a sleeper pick for nice holdover rainbow trout running from 1.5 to 3 pounds or better. The whole north shoreline has been the place to fish. Close to the dam, lures have been the tickets, but further east the fish are cruising near the shore and the best bet is to use PowerBait on a slip-sinker or Carolina rig fished close to the shore. Early morning fishing is best, but be prepared for sub-freezing weather. For an update on this action, check with the staff at Big Bear Sporting Goods at 909-866-3222.
